ahimsa04: Discussion, anyone?

Something to talk about/think about/post madly and incessantly about:

Everyone's got horror stories...

So what's the scariest thing that's ever happened to you on a canvass?

We're talking "a dog chased me" scary, "a gang tried to kill me" scary, whatever you've got, let's hear it!

March on!

Name: Kyra
Location: Milwaukee, soon to be Philly (p.s. KatieJo, why are you in my birthplace? is that where school is?)
Type of Canvassing: Democratic National Committee
What Got Me into it: I read a classified ad, it sounded cool and important, and Sara hired me right away
Interesting story: My first night out canvassing alone/with Daron, we approached this one house together. Daron starts, "Hi, my name is Daron, I'm with the Democratic National Committee--" and the sorta burly guy yells at us, as we are standing outside his chainlink fence, because that is where we are standing, "Get the hell off my property, you liberal son-of-a-bitch! I'm an American! Don't you ever come here again!"

I didn't know that liberals weren't Americans. But I'm gonna share another quick nice one. One older republican lady said to Dan and me once, "I appreciate what you're doing. We're all working toward the same thing, bettering our country." Which is totally the right way to see it, in my opinion...

Hello everyone! Your friendly mod here, with some startup lead-by-example information for ya...

Name: Katie Jo

Location: Milwaukee, WI, USA

What kind of canvassing: Door-to-door fundraising for the DNC

What got me into it: My friend Jaime called me up and said, "Hey... want to work for the Democrats this summer?"

My favorite canvassing story:
I was working this semi-affluent suburb of Milwaukee, called Whitefish Bay. I passed by this house on a corner, covered -and I mean PLASTERED- with Russ Darrow and Bush/Cheney signs and stickers. He started yelling at me, "Democrats are liars! You don't have any statistics to back up what you're saying!" His across-the-street-neighbor (who I'd been talking to at length earlier on) (also a Republican) came across the street and started yelling at HIM. "Hey, man, leave her alone! Katie, you don't have to take that!"

It was great; getting yelled at by one stranger, and defended by another.
